A Monarch Butterfly Friendly Town

The Town of Yorktown is a Monarch Butterfly Town! In June of 2020, the Town began planting a new garden at Willow Park that will become a monarch butterfly sanctuary. The butterfly sanctuary is intended to sustain the monarchs as they migrate north and south to their summer and winter habitats in North America. Yorktown Creates Butterfly Sanctuary

The Yorktown Garden Club and town officials began planting a new garden on Thursday at Willow Park that will become a monarch butterfly sanctuary.

Volunteers planted milkweed plants that nourish monarch caterpillars. The butterfly sanctuary is intended to sustain the monarchs as they migrate north and south to their summer and winter habitats in North America.

Every summer, Teatown campers visit the fields at Cliffdale and Hidden Valley, nets in hand, on the prowl for insects. Snapping the net with just the right motion, a camper can be rewarded with a grasshopper, bee, or butterfly.

The Journey North - Tracking the Monarch Butterfly Migration

In a unique partnership, you can join citizen scientists across North America to track the monarch butterfly's spring migration from Mexico. Spring migration begins in March. An announcement comes from Mexico when the monarchs are on their way. After living off their fat reserves all winter, tens of millions of monarchs head northward. With just a few weeks to live, they race to produce the next generation.
