Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program

The housing choice voucher program is the federal government’s major program for assisting low-income families, the elderly and the disabled to afford decent, safe and sanitary housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own rental housing.

Housing choice vouchers are administered by the Town of Yorktown’s Section 8 Office. Yorktown receives federal funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to assist eligible families.

Eligibility for a housing voucher is based on the total annual gross income and family size. Generally, the family’s income may not exceed 50% of the median income for the county or metropolitan area and by law; the Program must provide 75% of its vouchers to applicants whose income does not exceed 30% of the area median income. If the family is apparently income eligible, they may complete an application to have their name placed on a waiting list.

Demand for housing assistance exceeds the limited funding available, as a result long waiting periods are common. At this time, the waiting list is closed and pre-applications will not be accepted, however:

If you applied for the random lottery to be placed on the waiting list in April 2022, you can check your status commencing May 3, 2022 using your Used ID and password at http://waitlistcheck.com.

 The waiting list will remain closed until the Town provides a public announcement that the list will reopen.
