Yorktown Inaugurates New Turf at Woodlands Legacy Fields

March 8, 2024 – Yorktown officials cut the ribbon on a new playing turf at Woodlands Legacy Fields on Friday.

The new product from A-Turf replaces a 13-year-old turf and it sits on a 10-milimeter underlayment—a type of shock pad that keeps players safe and protects the turf. The estimated lifespan of the new, 380-by-260-foot turf is 12 years.

User fees from the sports clubs that use the field paid for the renovation.

 “Zero taxpayer dollars—that’s huge. The clubs with the turf replacement fees, as well as our developers who come in and help towards our recreational fees is what paid for this great facility,” said Deputy Supervisor Ed Lachterman. “You cannot put enough into what parks are for our kids. It’s sports. It’s activities. But most important it’s giving them something to do to keep them out of trouble.”

 Matthew Talbert, chair of the Yorktown Recreation Commission, noted that the Town decided about 11 years ago to begin a fund that would finance the field’s replacement.

 “Great job done by A-Turf. We’re proud of them and the professionalism that they provided to us and we’re looking forward to Monday when we open the door,” said Talbert.

 A-Turf is a leading supplier & installer of artificial grass field turf systems made with materials produced and assembled in the United States. Last year A-Turf submitted a winning bid of $726,000 for the project.

 “Yorktown is committed to its youth,” said Town Board member Sergio Esposito. “That’s what this is all about today. It’s something that our youth is going to use. We have state-of-the-art facilities all over Yorktown. It’s a great place to live,” said Esposito.
