Yorktown Launches Paint Recycling Program
September 27, 2024 —The Town of Yorktown launched a new paint recycling initiative on Friday.
Residents can recycle household paints, primers, stains, sealers, and clear coatings such as shellac and varnish. To ensure safety and proper disposal, all products must be in their original containers (no larger than 5 gallons), with the manufacturer’s printed label intact and a secured lid. Open or leaking containers will not be accepted.
“Our new paint recycling program is a vital step toward protecting our environment, our children, and our pets from the harmful effects of improper disposal,” said Supervisor Ed Lachterman. “By safely recycling leftover paint, we’re reducing toxic waste in our community, keeping hazardous materials out of landfills, and preserving Yorktown’s natural beauty for future generations.”
The recycling initiative is a collaboration with PaintCare, a nonprofit organization established by the American Coatings Association (ACA) to manage leftover paint in states with paint stewardship laws. The Town’s Refuse & Recycling Department will be accepting PaintCare products for recycling on the following Fridays:
- September 27
- October 18
- November 22
- December 13
Drop-off hours will be from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at 2279 Crompond Road (behind the Police Station). Accepted products include interior and exterior architectural paints such as latex, acrylic, oil-based, and enamel. The department will not accept paint thinners, aerosol paints, auto paints, or solvents.
