COVID Update for Nov 30th

From the desk of Supervisor Matt Slater:

Earlier today the Department of Health released new data for Westchester County municipalities.  This data is not real time and lags by nearly four days.  This is important to recognize because the potential impact of the recent Thanksgiving holiday has not been revealed.

Yorktown begins this week with 158 active cases in our community.  It is good news to see the number reduced from our last report of 180 but across New York State, the Hudson Valley and Westchester the infection rate continues to increase as does hospitalizations.  This means we cannot relax our attention or efforts to make responsible decisions.

County Executive Latimer reported today that the caseload in Westchester County has now topped more than 6,100.  The last time we had this many cases in Westchester County was May 3rd.  Hospitalizations have continued to climb now reaching 244 which equals that of May 31st.  We have not had backward movement in the past 6-8 weeks as a county.

Governor Cuomo has started to mobilize hospitals statewide in preparation for these numbers to continue on an upwards trajectory until mid-January.  Additionally, the Governor reported small gatherings were the cause of 65% of cases.

On Friday Derek Anderson, Executive Director of Northern Westchester Hospital, will join me for a community update at 4:00PM.  This can be viewed live on Optimum 20, Fios 33, the Town’s Facebook Page and Website.

As we have learned before COVID doesn’t quit and neither can we.  Until the vaccines are distributed amongst the greater population we must continue to look out for each other.  Be smart, wear a mask and don’t fall victim to COVID fatigue.  Yorktown is a strong community because we stand together.
