Update on Garbage Collection
(January 9, 2023) – Over the last week, many Yorktown residents experienced a disruption in their normal garbage and recycling collections.
Yorktown officials are successfully working with its refuse collection vendor to resolve the issues and they are confident that the situation is being addressed and resolved. As of Monday morning, most homes have had a pickup after the town’s new vendor, Competitive Carting, worked through the weekend to catch up.
“With the start of a new weekly cycle, we expect all collections will be getting back to normal,” said Deputy Supervisor Tom Diana. “If your refuse has not picked up by the end your normal collection day, leave it on the curb. To catch up, Competitive Carting’s crews have been working into the evening and may come by your home at a later hour than is typical.”
He added: “If by the next morning your trash is still on the curb, please call Competitive Carting at 914-477-5865 or submit an email to their website, competitivecarting.com and let them know your address and they will make a pickup.”
Diana said that the situation is a result of several factors:
- The town changed refuse collection vendors on January 1, and it is not unusual for initial pick-up glitches as new truck drivers and team learn the routes.
- The learning curve was compounded by the back-to-back four-day holiday weeks.
He noted that past changes in carting vendors have had similar initial disruptions.
“We recognize that last week’s disruptions were inconvenient and inconsistent with the level of service our residents expect and deserve,” the Deputy Supervisor said. “We have also received reports of crews comingling garbage with recycling. We have reported this to Competitive Carting and emphasized that comingling is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
He said that Competitive Carting will attend Tuesday’s Town Board to discuss the situation and their initial performance. “We encourage our residents to watch on the Town’s website or on public access television.”
