Yorktown Water will be Fluoridated Beginning July 30

July 18, 2024 – The Northern Westchester Joint Water Works will begin adding fluoride to Yorktown’s water on or about July 30.

The water district recently upgraded the Amawalk and Catskill Treatment Plants to meet more stringent health and safety requirements. Both treatment facilities can now properly fluoridate the water supply, using 20-23% hydrofluorosilicic acid, at a target dosage of 0.7mg/l.

“Since 2017, our water has not been fluoridated due to needed upgrades at the water facilities that serve about 40,000 Yorktown residents,” said Supervisor Ed Lachterman. “Studies have proven the benefits of fluoride in protecting tooth enamel and preventing tooth decay in children.”

During times in which the Amawalk Treatment Facility must supply water to all residents of NWJWW (Town of Cortlandt, Montrose, Somers, and Yorktown), the water district will suspend the fluoridation process.

Yorktown adds fluoride to its water because the Town Board voted to add the substance to the water about 12 years ago. At the time of that decision, the Town received a grant for the project, which required that the fluoridation project be completed.
