Girl Scouts Install Buddy Benches at Pools
August 11, 2023 – Two Girl Scout troops have commissioned buddy benches at Yorktown’s two municipal swimming pools to promote friendship and recycling.
Troop 2658 recently dedicated their buddy bench at the Junior Lake Pool in Yorktown Heights and Troop 2802 is in the process of installing their buddy bench at the Brian J. Slavin Aquatic Facility in Shrub Oak. The benches promote the Girl Scouts’ slogan “Make new friends, but keep the old.”
“Our Recreation Department is honored to help these Girl Scout troops discover their power and ability to change the world with community projects,” said Supervisor Tom Diana. “They deserve their Bronze Awards because they are reminding all of us about the need for kindness and friendship towards others.”
Town officials and Troop 2802 will hold a dedication ceremony for the new buddy bench at the Shrub Oak pool on August 28 at 5 p.m.
Both troops earned their Girl Scout Bronze Awards by collecting 500 pounds of plastic film and bags that were recycled into the benches by Trex, a manufacturer of composite decking and other home-improvement materials. Trex produced the benches through a national program that challenges groups to collect 500 pounds of soft plastics within a six-month period.
