Winter Weather Awareness Week

Winter Weather Awareness Week for New York is from November 1 through 7, 2015.  The Town of Yorktown is urging you to prepare for the harsh, and sometimes dangerous weather that the winter season often brings.

Sign up for community emergency notices on Nixle.com.

Tuesday

Build a Kit or Go Bag that is easily accessible and contains the basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency, including a weather related event. If the power does go out, your family needs to be prepared to be self sufficient should it not be possible to restore power to your home for a few days.

Winter storms can range from a moderate snow over a few hours to a blizzard with blinding, wind-driven snow that lasts for several days. Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures and sometimes by strong winds, icing, sleet and freezing rain.

One of the primary concerns is the winter weather's ability to knock out heat, power and communications services to your home or office, sometimes for days at a time. Heavy snowfall and extreme cold can immobilize an entire region.

The Ready.gov page on Winter Weather lists things you can do to prepare for winter weather including items to add to your Kit and how to winterize your vehicle: http://www.ready.gov/winter-weather
