Yorktown Senior Center Reopens

Yorktown’s senior nutrition center resumed last week after more than a year and a half of a pandemic-related suspension.

The nutrition program will operate on an abbreviated schedule from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Albert A. Capellini Community Culture Center, 1974 Commerce St., Yorktown. Lunch is served at noon and the program is available to adults 60 and older for a suggested contribution of $3.00.

“We have repeatedly stated that Yorktown will follow science and common sense as we return to normal routines,” said Supervisor Matt Slater. “With more adults and children in our community receiving vaccinations, indoor gatherings are becoming safer. We hope that the nutrition program will soon return to full service.”

The resumption of the nutrition program is the first step in a phased return of Yorktown’s senior programs. After a few weeks of monitoring, the Town of Yorktown will determine if it is safe to allow senior clubs to resume their activities at the community center.

“The Yorktown Senior Center re-opening last week is a huge boost to the staff and to the senior citizens,” said Noreen O’Driscoll, the senior center site manager. “The pandemic has been difficult on everyone, but especially to the seniors who were more vulnerable. It is a joyous occasion to be able to welcome them back.”

Seniors returning to the community center will notice improvements, including new flooring. Interested seniors should call the nutrition center at 914-962-7447 for more information or to make a lunch reservation.
