Traditional Landmark
Formal designation is the "gold standard" of historic preservation as it ensures that an historic property or site can never be destroyed except in cases of financial hardship. At the present time, Yorktown has 15 designated structures although many more are eligible for this distinction. Landmarking does not restrict an owner's right to make appropriate alterations and the Commission will assist owners to ensure that their plans preserve the historic character and value of their home. Commission reviews applications for historic landmarks and grants Certificates of Appropriateness to permit such alterations. Designated structures receive a large and attractive marker for their property.
