Yorktown Completes Library Community Room Renovation
April 11, 2024 – Yorktown celebrated the completion of renovations in the community room at the John C. Hart Memorial Library on Wednesday.
The library’s community room has a new floor, more seating, sound barriers to minimize noise from the ventilation system, a new ceiling, a new art display system and new lighting.
“The Town Board recognizes that our public library is an essential service for adults and children. The improvements made since the beginning of the year will allow more people to comfortably use the library during peak hours,” said Deputy Supervisor Ed Lachterman.
Construction in the community room began in January and the work lasted about eight weeks. After the community room reopened, workers spent another six weeks applying the finishing touches, which were completed last week.
“Our library serves as a town square. Residents come here to see each other and participate in many activities, which can now occur in a more comfortable setting,” said library director Yvonne Cech.
The total cost of the renovation was $84,237, with half coming from a 2022 state Construction Aid Grant for Libraries. An anonymous donor gave $5,000 for additional upgrades.
