Spring Awakening is a coming-of-age rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. It is based on the 1891 German play Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind. Set in late 19th-century Germany, the musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of adolescent sexuality. In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score.

The original Broadway production of Spring Awakening opened at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on December 10, 2006. Its cast included Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, and John Gallagher Jr. while its creative team comprised director Michael Mayer and choreographer Bill T. Jones. The original Broadway production won eight Tony Awards, including Tonys for Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score and Featured Actor. The production also garnered four Drama Desk Awards, while its original cast album received a Grammy Award. In addition, the show was revived in 2015 on Broadway and garnered three Tony Award nominations, among other honors.

Told by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater through what Entertainment Weekly called, “the most gorgeous Broadway score this decade,” Spring Awakening explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood with a poignancy and passion that is illuminating and unforgettable. The landmark musical is an electrifying fusion of morality, sexuality and rock and roll that is exhilarating audiences across the nation like no other musical in years.

CONTENT NOTE: The show will be performed by the Yorktown Stage Kids, 13-18 years of age.  Spring Awakening was chosen specifically for our more mature acting troupe. Please be advised this production contains mature themes such as abuse, sexual encounters, abortion, suicide, physical violence and strong language. Though the material may seem off-putting, we can assure you the production is done in a tasteful manner and has had great success in live performances throughout the county with other teen groups.  We have every confidence in the older performers to handle this material in a responsible way to convey a truly beautiful and powerful piece of theatre. Viewer discretion is advised.
