November 6, 2024An environmental restoration initiative is bringing young trees to Yorktown’s parks.

Parks workers planted some of the young trees in Downing Park on Friday morning. The trees come from Yorktown’s tree bank of more than 200 trees. The tree bank was created in 2021 at Willow Park.

The parks workers planted red maples on Friday because Downing Park is in a low-lying, flood-prone area and red maples tolerate wet ground.

“The effort is to bring back trees cut down during construction, blown down during storms or removed because of disease,” said Supervisor Ed Lachterman. “These red maples will be great for the field and playground conditions, and they will return trees to our community.”

On Thursday, parks workers planted new trees in Shrub Oak. The Yorktown Tree Commission works with the Planning Department and Parks and Recreation to determine the best locations for the young trees.

“Yorktown has been a Tree City USA for more than a decade. This is all part of our community’s commitment in that vein, so I really want to congratulate the tree committee, Parks and Recreation and the Town for continuing with this mission,” said Assemblyman Matt Slater.
