Yorktown Adopts New Smoke-Shop Restrictions

March 13, 2025 – The Yorktown Town Board has adopted a new local law imposing stricter restrictions on the sale of smoking and vaping products within the town.

The decision, made at the March 4 Town Board meeting, aims to protect the health and well-being of Yorktown’s youth by prohibiting smoke and vape shops from operating within a 1,500-foot radius of the property line of sensitive locations.

“Protecting the health of our children is a top priority for the Yorktown Town Board,” said Supervisor Ed Lachterman. “This new law reflects our commitment to creating a safe and healthy environment for our young people by limiting their exposure to potentially harmful products. We believe that by implementing these restrictions, we can play a vital role in preventing youth smoking and vaping.”

The new legislation defines sensitive locations as:

  • Schools
  • Playgrounds
  • Child-care facilities
  • Family day-care homes
  • Youth centers
  • Houses of worship
  • Community centers
  • Recreational facilities
  • Senior housing developments
  • Medical buildings
  • Parks

The Local Law shall take effect immediately upon filing in the office of the Secretary of State in accordance with Section 27 of the Municipal Home Rule Law.
